Secant Pile Shoring

Secant pile shoring systems are a useful excavation support system where loss of soil could cause undermining concerns for existing structures. Secant pile shoring consists of a row of intersecting drilled piles. Primary piles are installed first and are reinforced with steel. The secondary piles are then installed between primary piles creating a solid wall that never exposes the soils it is retaining during excavation.

The Benefits of Secant Pile Shoring Systems:

  • Soil is never exposed during excavation.
  • Excavation can be done all at once, instead of in stages.
  • Lower vibration than driven sheet piles.
  • Lower noise than driven applications.

How it Works:

  • Primary piles are installed along the perimeter of the proposed excavation at predetermined spacings.
  • Reinforcing steel, consisting of steel channel, W-beams or H-beams is placed in the primary piles.
  • Secondary piles, acting as lagging, are installed between the primary piles.
  • The excavation contractor can then begin site excavation as desired.
  • If additional support is required, grouted tiebacks can be installed into the wall and attached via a waler system that spans across the piles.
