Compaction Grouting

Ground improvement through compaction grouting is the process of injecting a low slump cement based grout into the ground under relatively high pressures.  This technique can be used to mitigate sinkholes, fill voids, and improve bearing capacity.  One of the principal advantages of compaction grouting is that its maximum effect is in the weakest soil zones.  As the mass of grout increases under pressure, the soil is densified through compaction.

The compaction grouting method typically consists of driving (or drilling if necessary) a flush joint injection pipe into the soils to refusal or a predetermined depth.  Cement grout (medium to low slump, ready mix or job mix) is then pumped through each grout injection pipe as the injection pipe is slowly extracted.  The result forms a sort of grout column that densifies, consolidates, and stabilizes the treated area.  Secondary injections, and sometimes tertiary are utilized to complete the process.

Limited or constrained access locations are ideal for compaction grouting applications as the equipment footprint is relatively light.  Compaction grouting is also a lower cost alternative to other options such a cut and fill or deep foundation solution.
